As an autistic researcher who has been researching neurodiversity in STEM for about a year now, my hypothesis is that the dopamine from the podcast is able to fill in the gaps from the broken dopamine loop, tricking our brains into not hating the tasks.

YEEESSSS yes yes yes!!! I learned about body doubling last year but didn’t realize that this is what I was doing every time I throw my headphones on 😭 it makes me feel like someone’s talking to me 🥹 like when my best friend comes over & just talks to me so I can clean!!

Audhd here. I always listen to radio or podcasts. I live in my big headphones. It has brought me much piece to find this out.

Wow this makes so much sense! I tend to get the most done when I’m listening to podcasts.

I get too easily distracted, I "listen" to the podcast with the captions on so I can be full present. So I guess the opposite is true for me, it's full of really interesting facts that let me relax bc I enjoy learning things.

I’m a housekeeper and I often choose to listen to decluttering videos to keep me motivated! They do feel like body doubling or like they’re distracting my brain from itself. Like keeping a hyper toddler occupied while momma gets some work done.

Yes podcasts/audio books do help and yes it's a know effect. The ADHD brain needs a specific degree of stimulation to work. It can't work with too under-stimulation. It can't work with over-stimulation. So depending on where you're at, you can choose your tools.

It must be something that is stimulating enough to stimulate the brain, but it cannot be engaging enough to lock the brain into hyperfocus.

Meanwhile when overstimulated, ASMR soundtracks are the go to. They calm the nervous system while NOT being silence where the racing brain overstimulates itself with thoughts. You throw it a figurative "harmless bone to gnaw at" so it's processing the ASMR sounds while finally getting yourself a break.

Also, very smooth plug of your podcast 😉

I can relate 100%. I cannot use it while I work because I'm a software developer and i cant focus on 2 complex trains of thought at the same time, but for tasks like cleaning, cooking, working out, etc where the thought process is almost automated, it works like a charm by removing that extra noise from the boredom of doing the task itself

It absolutely does. I listen to a D&D podcast when I'm doing house tasks. Tv falls into the problem where I can't find something that's interesting enough to casually listen to, but not so interesting that I want/need to focus on it. The lack of visuals makes it easier to stay on task.

I heard that ppl with ADHD have to be stimulated at the right level to “fly straight”. They lack dopamine so go looking for it and get distracted. A pod cast can deliver just enough dopamine to keep that person from looking for that hit, causing them to stay more focused on the task they need to stay focused on.
This is why stimulants work on ADHD. You find the right dose to take, to keep a good base level. I work in the trades, lots of unmediated ADHD’s in the trades. Lots of guys can’t work without music going. Now that I’m meditated I like to work without music, because now it’s too distracting.

I am autistic with a PDA profile. And I can't body double with a podcast or other human..it activates my nervous system (threat response) and I will be UNABLE to function as a normal human..or have to unwillingly mask to function. I will use lives or longer videos as company during my task.. seeing and hearing works better but not always.. so it is hit or miss..or if it seen or felt as a threat or not...

Yes, i do this. Podcasts, music... it distracts so i can focus. Sounds counterintuitive, but it works the way white noise works for NT people, but gives me sensory overload.

I imagine it has something to do with perception in the same way RSD is about a perceived rejection rather than an actual one. So, if someone perceives body doubling happening, someone effectively has it. I see this all the time in body doubling discord servers where people are just there doing their own stuff with mics muted, and yet everyone is able to get everything done without anyone talking. So I’m sure the inverse (voices without bodies) is possible.
