My idea was pact of the undead warlock with strahd as the patron forcing the character to spy on the party. And somehow breaking free of his control along the way.

I wanna play a plain vanilla human fighter using only the PHB. I don't like power fantasies and think the sense of overwhelming dread and terror works better when victory is not guaranteed but less likely.

I’m playing a Vistani character who works under more the good aligned Vistani. So far it’s added much more of a welcoming flavor whenever we come across other Vistani, and I’ve been able to talk other Vistani into not following my group around.

I played for one session (because that’s all the Dm did before dropping the campaign completely) a Female Lizardfolk Rogue with planned monk levels that uses the spinal cords of her fallen tribe after they turned into undead, and formed a whip out of their spines. She was Castlevania inspired but really only by name being Sonia and by her use of the whip, everything else is original and on the table, for being a dude I apparently freaked everyone out when I was able to voice her with a shockingly accurate female voice. I also had the DM to increase my damage dice from a d4 to a d6. It was such a cool character that I never got to play beyond one session and it will never happen again since most of the people from that group we had falling out with eachother and I never saw them again. To this day I still blame myself for it even though I don’t even know what it was that caused it.

A character concept that I'm planning onplaying at some point, feel free to use yourselves!
The scion of a great mosnter hunting family, nearly every male has set off for Barovia in the hopes of killing Strahd, and reclaiming their ancient homeland of Barovia. However, unlike his/her ancestor, this character has no interest in chasing after Strahd, even after their father vanished years ago.
Rather, they're compelled to journey into the mists after their spouse and child are kidnapped by Vistani, Strahd desiring yet another toy to play with.
A few classes could work. Monster Slayer Ranger would obviously fit, but I'm more biased towards Blood Hunter. I think it personally fits a bit more.
Whatever the class, the race and weapons choice would be the same. Pick Variant Human, grab the Crossbow Expert feat. Take a whip and hand crossbow.
Strategy is to basically keep as far form the enemy as possible, exploiting the Reach property on the whip, and the extra attack from Crossbow Expert. Perfect for if you want to evoke Van Helsing/the Belmont's from Castlevania!

When I played curse of strahd, I played a grave domain barovian dark elf cleric who worshiped the night mother, he worked with Van Richten in a plot to kill Strahd until he met the party.

Other idea, warlock with raven queen patron, the raven queen hate undead and she s a pretty chill boss

I was a human battlemaster the first time, then a Kenku Evocationist. Using catapult to throw bags of silver dust, or “danger glitter” was the best. My second best was flour bombing them then throwing a fire bolt in the dust cloud then watching them go up in flames

What if you want to become a true vampire and side with strahd secretly using the party to get close to him to uncover how he did it so you yourself can become a true vampire

I played an undead warlock in cos, and I survived. No really all I did was survive. I had a few tricks to help the rest of the party but besides that I was practically dead weight.

I'm on this Campaign.
Last night my party and I barely escaped a coven of vampires. One of my party members died and I had to carry my character's mom out I thankfully made the survival check (I'm proficient) and made it to the church with my party.
I'm a level 5 Bear Totem Barbarian and my character's mom is a wild fire druid who healed me while I cover the others escape. My mom went down and I hand to dash while carrying her.
My heart was racing!

The cult of Osybus have freeing Strahd from his dread realm as a primary goal so don’t think a devotee would wish to kill him, an ex cultist would be cool to play.
