Well I think it's fair to have 2 days bereavement and the excess in unpaid time off. She got the time off, I don't think her employer should pay for the full time off she took for a death in a family. She knew she got the 2 days and the remaining paid off. Don't see the problem here, and yes the boss could have said you can take this year extra time unpaid off for the vacation. Why should the employer always have the burden for everything.

It's pretty normal that corporations have set rules for these type of occurrences, like death in family, wedding, etc. 2 days is pretty normal, also in other countries like in European countries. Ok so she used her paid time off for the death of her relative. She can take the vacation then as unpaid leave.
