Day 49 of one boating tip a day!

The Heave-to MOB method is my preferred initial response if I were on deck during a man overboard (MOB) situation. It allows you to slow down, turn, and stay close to the MOB, giving you a moment to catch your breath and possibly use the engine to control your drift as you approach them.
Sorry if this explanation was a bit rushed—I’ll be working on longer YouTube videos where I can speak more slowly and share all the finer details.
To master this, you need to practice with your boat, understand how well it heaves-to, and practice, practice, practice. Here’s a step-by-step:
1. Take three deep breaths and head downwind briefly.
2. Begin turning into the wind without adjusting the sails.
3. Turn on the engine as you make this maneuver.
4. Assume the heave-to position.
5. Engage reverse to slow your forward momentum.
6. Assess your trajectory toward the MOB and adjust with either forward or reverse throttle based on your speed and direction.
7. Prepare a line to throw.
8. Scoop the MOB with the line.
9. Shift the engine to neutral and stay in the heave-to position, or drop the sails if you’re moving too fast.
10. Pull them back on board.
11. Asses their health and act accordingly
