Star Island is part of the Isles of Shoals, which is a string of islands in the Gulf of Maine. It has been a spiritual retreat for Unitarians, United Church of Christ followers, as well as worshippers from faiths around the world. It is also a writers' and artists' retreat; poet Celia Thaxter based much of her work here.
.
Nearby Smuttynose Island is a science-and-research center for the University of New Hampshire and Cornell University.
