Sons of the Forest is a survival horror video game that serves as the sequel to the 2014 game, The Forest. Players control a protagonist who is stranded on an island inhabited by cannibals. The game introduces friendly NPCs, including Kelvin, a deaf and mute companion who players can give written commands to, and Virginia, a three-legged, three-armed woman who can be equipped with weapons to aid in combat. The map in this game is four times bigger than its predecessor, and players can receive different endings based on their actions. The game supports up to eight-player cooperative multiplayer or solo play.

The game's plot revolves around a team of mercenaries dispatched to an island called Site 2 to search for PuffCorp's founder and his family, who have gone missing. The team's helicopters are shot down by unknown assailants, and the player's character wakes up with only a survival kit, a GPS tracker, and a deaf companion named Kelvin. As they explore the island, they encounter mutant cannibals and discover PuffCorp's secret intentions for the island. They find various underground bunkers and facilities built by PuffCorp and learn more about the true nature of Site 2 and the competition between PuffCorp and Sahara Therapeutics over control of an artifact known as the "Cube." The player must find a way to survive the island and ultimately make a decision on whether to stay or leave the island.
