Backyard is simply a Garten in German cause the typical house only has a garden in the back while a front yard (Vorgarten) is uncommon. Garten Hinterm Haus makes it clear too

It is not confusing because in the most cases it is not important to know exactly if there are flowers or vegetables in the garden. It's a garden!
And maybe another point: a lot of german gardens have mostly basically the same structure: Something to sit for a "Grillabend", some flowers and unused green, for exampne fir children to play etc.
And in Germany the garden is in the most cases in the back of the house, because we dont want to eat and talk mear by the street.
We also have sometime a "Vorgarten", so a garden in front of the house, but it will be not used as a garden. It is only for some flowers and an nice look.

I mean it is pretty clear from the context which one is meant:
"Mama ich gehe im Garten spielen"
(Mom I'll go play in the garden)
Or
"Ich hole mir eine Tomate aus dem Garten"
(I'll get a tomato from the garden)
But the later one is called "Beet" more often than "Garten" in my experience.

Because we have the word Vorgarten which means in the front garden or front yard. As german houses are mostly build directly at the street with the private area behind them backyards are the norm front yards are not.

I'm a Brit and I don't see what there is to be confused about. A yard is a concrete area often with rusty abandoned building or garden equipment standing around, with little sunlight and seeds growing out of cracks in the concrete.
After watching loads of videos on this topic I have come to the conclusion that an American might have a garden in their yard whilst a Brit might have a yard in their garden.
In German, a Hinterhof is what you have been told. A Hof on the other hand (without the sleazy connotation of "hinter") can be many things, often quite nice rural areas with animals, chickens, or a shady seating area, playground,orchard or vineyards.

Backyard is a Hintergarten (Garden behind). But i would only use this word if you also have a Vorgarten (frontyard). To prevent the confusion of saying that you are sitting in the garden but you actually have a front and a backyard. Let's say you don't have a frontyard, your backyard simply is your garden instead of Hintergarten.
