On our trip in Norway we went for a visit to Jostedalsbreen National Park! It's a big glacier, the biggest one in Europe and there're different view points from the different sides. We went to the viewpoints of Kjenndalsbreen and Bøyabreen.
Just to give you an idea of the views you can get, I made this short video! I hope you'll enjoy!
JOSTEDALSBREEN NATIONAL PARK
Almost half of the Jostedalsbreen National Park is covered by the Jostedalsbreen glacier, which is the largest glacier in mainland Europe.
The national park is famous for its wide variety of natural environments all within a short distance of each other, ranging from valleys with lush vegetation to bare mountain and glacier landscapes. A short hike in this area is like hiking from one season to another.
The Jostedalsbreen National Park is easiest to access in Jostedalen (Luster), Fjærland (Sogndal) and Veitastrondi, and you can participate in glacier hikes and visit glacier museums in Jostedal and Fjærland.
Kjenndalsbreen Glacier
In the end of Lodalen, you find Kjenndalen and Kjenndalen Glacier. The beautifull drive through Lodalen to the glacier, is worth the trip alone. The narrow roads and the mesmerizing greenblue water is a sight, and a must do when you are in the area.
The Kjenndalen valley and the Kjenndalen Glacier lie at the end of Lodal valley, 17 km from Loen and a 15 minute walk from the Jostedal Glacier's lowest glacier arm. At the end of Lovatn Lake you´ll find Kjenndalsstova, a cafe which is open from May to September. Between 1980 and 1997 the glaciers grew by over 300 metres, but in the last few years the glacier arms have actually been retreating.
Bøyabreen Glacier, Fjærland
You can see Bøyabreen at quite close range from the main road in Fjærland, or admire it from the Brevasshytta restaurant, even closer to the ice.
This is one of the most spectacular of the glacier branches. When you visit the Norwegian Glacier Museum in Fjærland, you can see parts of it. A five-minute drive from there you can get a full view of the impressive ice fall. At the Brevasshytta café, you can sit by the big panorama windows and perhaps be lucky to see big blocks of ice crashing down.
