This is only semi-related but I've built bench hooks and am building my first shooting board. Bootstrapping precision like this, as traditional as it is, is frustrating, and it seems to me like buying a shooting board and thus borrowing somebody else's precision would be way more worthwhile than buying other tools made partially of wood. And yet it's normal to buy every tool one uses and abnormal to buy bench hooks + shooting boards. If you can plane perfect right angles then you can make as many try-squares, marking gauges, smoothing planes, mitre boxes, etc. as you want.

I have bench hooks that are "adjustable" in a way, depending on piece size &/or room on the table. A single 3ft. piece of all-thread holds them together with variable spacing between hooks. Light finger pressure on the 4 nuts is sufficient. The rod slides through the hooks with a tiny bit of play. The rod's 1/4 in. thick. Not too beefy or bendy. It keeps things square, not trapezoidal especially if you're planeing diagonally.

Looks a bit unstable but not to the point of being a problem
