That's So Raven had a back door pilot that almost became the original plan for Hannah Montana, but never made it past the pilot.

Happened with the Rugrats too, there was an episode in the main series where they were teenagers, before they made All Grown Up.

I remember this episode. It felt weird that the main characters weren't the main focus and instead focused on characters we've never seen before. This make so much sense.

Similar thing happened with Fairly Odd Parents and the episode about that Crash Nebula Show

I remember seeing one on The Nanny! It was a backdoor pilot for a salon sitcom iirc

We also got NCIS from a few backdoor pilot episodes in JAG (the original NCIS, not the other ones)

I love backdoor pilots, itā€™s such a fun concept. Though I can t decide if itā€™s more interesting when they do or when they donā€™t become full shows.

I have no idea if this is confirmed, but The Office has this episode on one of the late seasons that focuses pretty heavily on Dwight and his extended family owning a new farm. And most of his extended family are new characters. It really felt like the set up for a Schrute Farms spin-off, but clearly they didn't end up doing it.

I remember this episode of That's So Raven because "Delivery!" and "That's not a line. That's a word." still live rent-free in my head

I remember they did this on supernatural like 3 times and none of them worked out. Thatā€™s how I found out the term back door pilot too.

The bad part of backdoor pilots is that it creates a very messy expanded universe where several shows are connected to each other through pilots xD

Supernatural had so many back door pilots after season 7. Some of which were cool as hell and Iā€™m still upset they didnā€™t get green lit.

I remember the backdoor pilot for the show about Jess in California aired during Gilmore Girls, and the backdoor pilot for The Finder aired during Bones.

One of the earliest I know of is ā€œAssignment: Earthā€, from the second season of the original Star Trek. Another one that didnā€™t get made, but was incorporated into Star Trek canon just last year.

There was one on the show "Bones" where she finds this eccentric guy called "The Finder" and asks him to do something for her while she is on her case, then the episode just follows his team. I think it actually did get 1 season before being cancelled.

Married with Children did this, the episode had Matt Leblanc as the would be protagonist

My favorite one is the one from the office that would introduce ā€œthe farmā€ in which Dwight shoots his auntā€™s corpse before their family buries her.

Some good examples of backdoor pilots that did become there own successful shows are Mork and Mindy and Lavern and Sherly, both of witch started out as episodes of Happy Days.

I rarely like backdoor pilots because I tune in to see my favorite main characters, not the random new characters they would try to focus on. šŸ¤·šŸ½ā€
