The historical method used by historians distinguishes between primary and secondary sources. Alt-ancient history promoters don't do this. So what method do they use to sift out reliable from unreliable testimony?

The method is called "cherry-pick".

You can dismiss myth all you want, but when Galactus, Devourer of Planets, returns... right before we all die, I'll be the one screaming, "I told you so!"

They believe that the lack of evidence is somehow, itself, evidence.

I imagine the volume or number of corroborated accounts of the same or similar events might also be relevant. An a non-expert I have read and heard about the history of Rome as reported by different sources with historical relevance to the period of its empire. As opposed to say, Atlantis.

The method seems pretty clear: start with the conclusion and anything that might be streatched to support it is a good source.

David, to help you understand the process, let's take an example. No TRUTH can be discerned from myth, but suggestions of historical "truths" can be, and pointers toward real historical events. Take the Trojan Horse... if you analyze its description and compare it to a battering ram of the era, you find a number of striking parallels. A shed-like structure hiding the enemy inside. Covered in (horse?) hides to protect them from fire, rained down from above. Maybe a horse shaped battering head to break down the wall of Troy... etc. Add a little mythologizing about sneaking in, rather than fighting one's way into the city (fighting was so 1250 BCE-ish... and what's to be praised about that? Anyone could do that.) Shake together and you end up with a truly epic EPIC! Same for Atlantis... the Minoans and Sea Peoples, with a bit of allegory mixed in. Talos... the Minoan "bronze giant" that patrolled the coasts of Crete... the bronze armed sailors that patrolled the coasts of Crete, looking out for pirates. Even Plato got into the game, saying Talos was an allegory for the Minoans taking the bronze tablets around the countryside, displaying the Laws of the Land. It goes on and on... Deucalion's Flood, Metis, etc. etc. Not a lot of "real" history in the way we think of history today, but a lot of story-making mythologized history to remind the Athenians where they came from and how great they were.
Hope that helps.

As somebody who used to believe in this stuff, I generally didn't research what I was told, I just believed it because I wanted to. And in the 1980's, there was no easy access to people who could actually read Cuniform and the like, especially for a working class person like myself who wasn't in higher education. The public library was the only option. There are fewer excuses for avoiding research in the modern age.

That said, I believe that there are lots of lost civilisations to be found, some may surprise us with the skills and technology they had for the age they lived in...but we will never find these civilisations that allegedly had lightbulbs or industrial stone cutting machines because they never existed to begin with.

My favorite are those people that are really into Atlantis. They’ve clearly never read Plato or they would know the Atlanteans are the bad guys.

Alt history people do that Glenn Beck narrative weaving trick with the bulletin board, thumbtacks and a string. (This person, this statistic, this happening, voila, conspiracy.)

Examining the physical evidence for yourself and come up with a conclusion based on what you know .
Cross examinations are good , with others collections as well as your own , repetition is very important .
