Oh, I dunno. Maybe not flat cause some would need to be in the middle and could work loose, slide back and drop through the windshield of the car liely following too close behind. Why don't you give it a try. See if you can strap down 6 or 8 'lumber' lying flat and side by side and see if the center few are ALWAYS tight as the outer. Reemember you only have to get it wrong once.
Or do what he did and get it right everytime because you do basically the same as wrapping a bundle of sticks rather than using one to whack you upside the head.
