A lot of us have the deep desire of adventuring and exploring what's beyond the known, it's what we are made of and where we come from. For Dr. Bradley Garrett it's an impulse to explore, Dr. Bradley is an American social and cultural geographer at university college Dublin in Ireland who's been interested in a forgotten abandoned system of tunnels that lie under the grounds of London. He explains the complexity of the tunnels and his journey all the way down. These layers underneath the city of London probably shouldn't have been re-explored....

I miss those days of JRE 16’ 17’ 18’ were prime years. He’d have the most captivating guests in between his hilarious comedian buddies lol

Can confirm from my time working as an infrastructure security contractor. Data and comms cables are fairly fragile, so we still have to send teams down into the underground networks when upgrading systems. Best experience/time of my life.

My dad, uncle, and one of their friends stumbled upon an underground military base here after hurricane hugo. It’s a trespassers will be shot on sight area. They didn’t know where they were at first until my dad said he poked his head into a tunnel with lights and saw a man walking in uniform. He was like oh god we have to gtfo here. They had to dig under a Constantine wire fence to get out because they were already miles in from where they started and Jeep’s were driving around at night. The hurricane had ripped down fences and they just walked right in lmao. My uncle has a nasty scar down his forearm from a bobbed wire fence they also had to climb that night. This is the south where underground anything barely exists because the ground is so wet and soft. But the military still has underground bunkers and tunnels. I don’t mind sharing the story now that my dad isn’t alive anyway and this was the day after Hugo in 1989.

100 ft is 10 stories, that's really deep... Why the hell is there so much shit underneath London?

*Edit: After 7.6k likes for this dumb comment I decided to fix the punctuation and also point out that I realize now that 100 ft is only about 8 stories, maybe 7, and that isn't really all that deep in a major metropolitan area with subways and sewer systems and such...never mind one that has been active for 2000+ years. But thanks for all the likes and comments that were far more tolerant of my wondering ignorance than I generally am of such from typical plebs on the internet.... At least that other comment has over 16k likes now, that is well deserved. Mine? Not so much. :yougotthis::washhands:

Fun fact. Asbestos removal has been my career for over 2 decades now, I worked in and walked every inch of those bt tunnels. Fun fact 2. I'm 6ft 2.5". The bt tunnels are 6ft. My neck was constantly sore for over 2 years. I don't miss that place one bit.

I work for BT, and the underground telecommunications network is vast! The underwold is heavily congested with cables. Fault finding can be a nightmare, especially when working in large cities with ATEs (Telecommunications exchanges) such as London, Edinburgh, Birmingham, etc... It's like going back in a time warp.

I worked in these tunnels for almost 2 years when i was 16/17 there were over 262 miles of tunnels mapped out just inside the m25, and this is just what was on our map, nothing extraordinary until one day we had to do work on a tunnel that wasnt on our map, known as the Q tunnel, we entered via a shed down a back alley and inside were two millantry servants they took our phones and searched us before we could enter! They one followed us around whilst we completed our work with some sort of rifle, this tunnel was far bigger that the rest and had loads of closed side tunnels, one set of doors we opened had 2ft thick concrete doors, also there was another set of hude doors which were heavily manned, i asked what was in there and our guide said even he has never seen or knows and isnt even aloud to ask others whats behind them doors… some crazy shit, he also said there is tunnels below pretty much every major city but London deffo has the most

The problem with going under "Normal" places is that it is never normal again. All you can think about is what is under it, and how the surface is just a facade.

I know this guy. Dr.Bradly is a amazing human being. But Joe kept interrupting him. I wish he was able to get into detail about his adventures. Trust me he barley scratched the surface.

One of the best. You do great with adding images and maps for perspective. Some people just upload a clip from JRE with their name posted on top. Thank you for raising the bar. Well done sir.

I used to live in London. I heard they were digging for a new underground Trainline and they had to stop work for a bit because they dug into a mass grave from the Black Death.

I’ve seen this first hand when they were doing construction for a new skyscraper in SF. Overlooked a barrier and let me tell you that shit was DEEP! Like a whole other world down there.
