In the parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector (Luke 18), Jesus articulates that the fundamental prerequisite of repentance is humility. The Pharisee would have acknowledged the presence of sin in his life, he would have nodded in agreement at the need for God’s grace, but he never truly had been humbled/broken over his sin. You can have your PHD in theology and affirm the doctrine of man’s sinfulness, confess with your mouth “all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God,” and yet in your heart of hearts never experience total contrition over your own sin.

Furthermore, you can affirm the doctrine of God’s undeserved grace and still think that His grace was extended to you because of your performance.

There is only one type of person in heaven: humble.
