I think this is a consequence of a two party system, people may want multiple things, but only one candidate covers that part of the metaphorical venn diagram. They might want austerity as well as abortion rights, no candidate grants both. It almost feels like using the wrong formula to get the right answer, but a multiparty system would definitely solve this.

I suppose they did not feel like voting for Kamala, even though the majority favored abortion rights.
Edit: And no! The Harris campaign did not entirely just focus on abortion. It was Republican media that made it seem like she did. Nevertheless, Trump won fair and square. (I'm not American. This is just what can objectively be observed.)

Okay but this is painting it like Trump is vehemently anti-abortion which he is not. This is exactly what Trump wants, the states and their people to decide what’s best for them. As far as republicans go he is pretty moderate on the topic and these shady media tactics are what landed him a crushing victory.

Which shows the system working AS INTENDED. The federal government is not meant nor designed to be some overbearing authority. The federal governments role is well defined in the constitution. The overturning of Roe v Wade passed responsibility back to the states, and it is now the responsibility of the people of these states to vote. If their state representatives aren't voting how they want them to, then they need to elect someone else. But, people don't like to hear that.
