Vitiligo (vit-il-EYE-go) is a skin disorder that causes the skin to lose its color. Smooth white areas (called macules if less than 5mm or patches if 5mm or larger) appear on a person’s skin. If you have vitiligo in a place that has hair, the hair on your body may also turn white.

The exact cause of vitiligo is unknown but it is believed that the condition occurs when melanocytes (the skin cells that produce melanin, the chemical that gives skin its color, or pigmentation) are destroyed by the body’s immune system.

Vitiligo affects people of all skin types, but it may be more noticeable in people with darker skin. The condition is not life-threatening or contagious. It can be stressful or make you feel bad about yourself.

Vitiligo (also known as Leukoderma) may not be painful or life-threatening, but the social stigma attached to it makes life a struggle for those who are affected. This condition causes light-color patches on face and other parts of the body. This may have a devastating impact on the self-confidence of the affected person. But, there are many people who do not let the social stigma bog down their self-esteem.
