I *lived in a small rural town... never needed a note, or the brand. They knew who my mom was. Everyone knew everyone's mom and kids. Couldn't get away with nothing either! πŸ˜†

I’d go to the store for my neighbor for a loaf of bread and a pack of Salem’s. Had my note. Got my nickel change for a coke icee. Seemed fair to me. Good deal for an 8 year old

OMG........ did this bring back memories. Now, how many of you were super poor and your Mom would send you down to the store with one of the larger food stamp notes (food stamps came in varying paper denominations in a booklet) to buy a cheap piece of gum so you could get the change to buy her cigarettes?

I used to do the same thing for my parents. Take a note to the 7-11.

I remember riding my Huffy High Jinx banana seat bike to get my Mom Benson and Hedges menthol 100s. Quarter would get you any candy bar.

At least you got candy. Our trip on our bikes was 4 miles round trip.

The liquor store always had the best candy! Just aisles of it! So cheap, too! We would scrounge together change, buy all the candy, and hang out in our fort and eat it. In later years we also smoked cigarettes up there.

My mom liked Marlboro red box shorts. She'd give me the money and a note. And if bring back her cig.

There's truth in that. I remember in the 60s being locked out of the house with my brothers and sisters not aloud back into the house. She would tell us she was cleaning the house and didn't want us in the house and dirty it. What my Mom was really doing was watching her soap operas.
