Robinson's Podcast #233 - Judith Butler: Trump & Harris | Israel & Palestine | Sex & Gender

Judith Butler is Distinguished Professor in the Graduate School and formerly the Maxine Elliot Chair in the Department of Comparative Literature and the Program of Critical Theory at the University of California, Berkeley. In this episode, Robinson and Judith discuss three broad topics. First, they talk about Judith’s latest book, Who’s Afraid of Gender? (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2024). In particular, they touch on the dynamics of sex and gender, as well as their political dimensions. Second, the conversation turns to the 2024 presidential election between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. Finally, they broach the topic of Israel and Palestine, with particular attention to the questions of genocide and anti-semitism.

This kind of particularism and historical relativism is just unhelpful. Nazi Germany is the typical point of reference, but there are of course other historical examples that can be learned from, like Sudan, South Africa, Ireland, and the United States. Certainly, present conditions are novel by virtue of the fact that we are not living in the period of Nazi Germany, and these particular conditions must be specifically addressed, but to simply disregard the moments in the past when similar tendencies erupted is only setting us up for an uninformed, really unthinking approach to present crises.

So is her point that "Nazis" were simply an element of a speaific historic time period and geographic local, and comparing groups or phenomena from other times and/or places is not useful? If so I cannot argue witt the technical correctness of such a point, I dont see how anyone could.

These are not your typical analogies that clarify or draw parallels. These are just appeals to emotion, because this historical period is what has become synonymous with the concept of "evil" in the public unconscious. Accuracy has never been the goal.

It is not innacurate to describe the Israeli behaviour as analogous to the Nazis .

Point being: instead of using analogies, why not simply describe the actual situation between Palestinians and Israelies IN THEIR OWN TERMS. Analogies are dangerous for they carry into the receiving end not only the insights from the earlier case, but also the ideological and emotional politics that mobilize them (e.g., ultranationalism).

How the hell are Palestinians as "Nazi"...what????

|

@YAM1981

The first claim is absurd! The second claim is however plausible. You cannot deny the similarities between the atrocities inflicted by the Nazis on the Jews in Europe then and those inflicted since then by the Jews on the Palestinians, Lebanese, and Syrians etc.

I think the reason they make reference to nazis, is because of the horrific way they treated the jews, and the jewish "state" is involved, even if most of them are secular. So for jews, the ultimate insult is calling someone a nazi, and for the Palestinians calling the israelis nazis, is because they've displayed worse behavior than the nazis, and they constantly quote hitler.
