I became homeless when I was 20 after becoming disabled and losing my job. People underestimate how easy it is be become homeless and how hard it is to get out of it. I was EXTREMELY lucky because I was eventually able to get in contact with some family across the country who were willing to come get me and let me live with them. I genuinely don't think I'd still be here if it wasn't for their kindness. To everyone reading this, please try to extend just a little bit of kindness and understanding towards homeless people. You're closer to being in the same spot than you realize.

life-long portland resident here.. it's heartbreaking hearing our neighbors who have the financial and social priveleges to live in a home bash and demonize our homeless neighbors. when you get to the root of the issue, it's a systemic issue, on a state and federal level. and no amount of demonizing poor, addicted, and homeless people will change that reality. they are the result of our system failing us, and we deserve to fight for them, and ourselves. many don't realize how quickly you can become homeless, especially in our economy right now. no positive change can happen if we continue to beat down the underprivileged, only more of a social divide.
