The Appalachian accent is characterized by a Scotch Irish influence. It preserves certain aspects of Elizabethan English through distinctive pronunciations — for example, “like” sounds like “lack.” A musical quality comes from initial syllable stress, which is when the emphasis is shifted to the first syllable of a word.❤

I used to substitute teach in Temecula, CA some years ago. Often I'd be queried "Where're you from Mr. J?". Eventually I realized that, although I did not hear nor correct for it, I still retained a southern accent. Now I simply think of it as a variant of a "British" accent. BTW the students were happy and rekaxed when I subbed because I actually managed the classroom, discouraging side talking and misbehavior. 😊

your voice is so unique I could listen to you to you read a book to me all day. You should be a professional book reader and do audiobooks you could read your own novels to us or stories that you like to tell you’re very busy girl I know that, I’m old enough to be your grandpa but I still get a kick out of your videos. Thanks for sharing.

I’m a former English teacher from Cabarrus Co NC, and we used to tell students all the time about the strong connection btwn Southern / Appalachian English and Elizabethan/Jacobite/Shakespearean English. You demonstrate this beautifully. Maybe more importantly, you show that being from this area and having this accent doesn’t mean you’re dumb. Thank you for these posts! “This above all—To thine own self be true…”

i'm from the Appalachian part of KY, i think everything sounds better the way we talk! but maybe that's bias, lol. i worked in a few different call center jobs, and was pleasantly surprised at the number of times people told me they like the way i talk, which was such a relief. cuz there are some people that assume stuff about us mountain folk that ain't true, simply on account of having a strong accent. hmm. maybe i could get a side job as a voice actor, or one of them people that reads audio books, that'd be sweet
