I hopped on a small boat on the Isle of Skye to explore the stunning Loch Dunvegan with a local man who kindly ran the tour even though I was the only customer! We saw soo many seals and even spotted a sea otter and a heron! The seals were completely unbothered by our presence since they’ve been around humans for decades (we didn’t get as close as it might appear in the videos as it can distress the animals, I filmed them using a zoom lens). One of the females is even thought to be over 30 years old! I still can’t get over how curious and playful they were – it was such a magical and unforgettable experience 😭

Scotland has a lot of fascinating folklore surrounding seals. The Selkies are believed to live as seals in the sea but can shed their skin to become human on land. In many stories, a Selkie woman will shed her seal skin and dance on the shore, only to have her skin stolen by a human man. Without her seal skin, she cannot return to the sea, so she is forced to stay on land, often marrying the man who took her skin. These stories often end tragically, with the Selkie eventually finding her skin and returning to the sea, leaving her human family behind.
