The first plane to cross the English Channel, the Blériot XI, is on display at the Louwman Museum. This aircraft was piloted by Louis Blériot on July 25, 1909, when he became the first person to fly across the English Channel in a heavier-than-air aircraft. The flight took 36 minutes, covering a distance of 22 miles from Calais, France, to Dover, England. This achievement won Blériot a £1,000 prize offered by the Daily Mail and brought him instant fame
