Agree ,because that's a roof rated screw not a framing rated screw ,lot of framers use them because although to cheap they are way less expensive than the truss/ framing rated screws!!

5 inch and above beams. , u use 1/2 lag bolts. Not screws .

Nah. Everytime i did this, it strips wood = screw dont hold 💩.
Better way is to smear wood glue, and tighten till first stop. That connection never failed me. Even better, get metal strap with holes and put 2 or 4 screws on both sides, for more secure connection

Wouldn't the mallet after the screw is in not work because of the threads? Although I've done the same thinking it would get tighter. Clean work, very nice

Although once completely assembled, it should be sturdy enough . Timber brackets would be a nice touch along with extra downforce support on those notches.
