My daughter's gf loves this book and I've not read it but I follow this guy so I've not been asking a lot of questions so I don't have anything to respond to her with when she starts discussing it. I dunno how I'll react if James does a full length review so maybe it's best for both of us if you just let this lay right here. Maybe? Maybe. I still watch but if I know more, I'll have to say more. I think the writing style just isn’t for you. In most high fantasy the main conflict is centered around broad politics with a war/physical fight as the climax to the story and romance/relationships being more of a subplot. In these new contemporary-esque fantasies the main conflict is centered around the character’s relationships with one another with the climax of the story being a pivotal moment in the main relationship (like two characters getting together or having a massive conflict) and the overarching political drama feels like more of a subplot. One style is not inferior they just target different audiences. Often women gravitate towards the intimate interpersonal narratives and men gravitate towards the broader overarching narratives. That’s of course a generalization, though.

booktok and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race. they have greatly increased the recognition of those of us who write "indie books", but they have destabilized quality, have made reading unfulfilling, have subjected book reviewers to indignities, have led to widespread psychological suffering (in the third world to physical suffering as well) and have inflicted severe damage to the reading community.
