For those just getting into detailing you may be asking- “What tools do I ABSOLUTELY need for detailing?” And “Do I NEED a steamer for interiors?”- the answer… YES… and No. You CAN use them but I find they sometimes can do more harm than good if you don’t follow common sense principles. Steam and electronics don’t mix. Steam and plastics can lead to burns and stains. Sometimes I’d rather just clean with a chemical, brush and blow it out. But sometimes you need the deep heat cleaning blast to blow out grease from a seat track or melt crayons from a crusty cup holder. So while they have their place I rarely use mine and encourage that you proceed WITH CAUTION.

Completely agree. Just like the carpet extractor, it’s not really a use every time type of thing but when you do need it, it’s a life saver.

the steamer often helps me clean even large areas like doors and floors faster if they are heavily covered with dirt, and also helps to neutralize the APC

I got a pretty powerful one (Dupray Tosca). It blows the dirt out of the cracks so well I don't even need my detail brushies anymore o.O
Steam can refresh carpets a bit. Cannot do salt though. For salt stains I shampoo the carpet with boiling water + shampoo and shop-vac it out.

I really enjoyed this short.
Should the steamer be one of your first purchases no.
Should you have one in your arsenal for special cases absolutely.
How do you like the McCulloch?

Yes, depending on how filthy the vehicle is. Chemicals do the job when diluted correctly, but when you have candy, that's another reason to use it besides crayons.😜

Omg. I’m so glad I saw this video. My steamer is arriving tomorrow and it’s going to go right back. I thought I was doing the right thing but based on this I’m not going to risk damaging plastic. Thank you Thank you Thank you

A steamer used sparingly pays us detailers dividends ❤. Ive seen a previous detailers screwup, theymelted the lower drivers window switch recess due to excessive steam temps....

I find it’s very helpful for hammered interiors. Must use with caution for sure but I love using a steamer when it’s just a gross interior. Makes faster work.

Measured response, well thought out, and not giving people a hard time for doing something you don't necessarily do yourself. Excellent work.

I use mine a whole lot, but it's usually in an attempt to use fewer chemical cleaners, substituting in water as a basic solvent and adding the heat to improve the cleaning process in the absence of APC/other cleaners. That said, I don't suggest it for everyone, and just like most of the stuff detailers use on a day-to-day basis, it's incredibly important to understand its proper usage and the risks of potential damage associated with improper application.

I agree, I break it out every once and a while for extremely dirty, goopy interiors. Most times a good cleaner, brushes and elbow grease does the job
