You cut off ( and wasted) quite a bit at the base of the stalk before cutting into small pieces. I use a second-hand Breville, and does the job nicely. Don't know why it's so important to cut into small lengths, but if that works for you, great. I just cut 1" off the base, and take the individual lengths (stalks) and wash with a vegetable brush.
