A simple model mimicking the behaviour of the mosquito antenna. A deflection of the antenna (blue arrow) induces a rotation of the motile antenna relative to the immotile pedicel (red arrow). The translation from deflection into rotation causes a nonlinear processing that enables mosquitoes to hear frequencies outside their hearing range by introducing nonlinear distortion products (difference tones) between the mosquitoes own flight tones and an incoming sound from another mosquito.
