This isn't true, the plan was to use the Expansion Pak the whole time, with the bug only coming up later in development. The Expansion Pak actually does have some uses, mainly with creating the game's dynamic lighting.

From what I know, it was some sort of memory leak that was causing a glitch near the end of the game but I think another big reason why the expansion pack was released along side DK64 was because Nintendo behind the scenes wasn't completely sure if they were going to be releasing the N64 DD outside of Japan knowing their competition Sega launching the DC & Sony with the PS2 that was coming in the new year so they needed something that would provide enough memory for these games to run, like Perfect Dark for example.

Unfortunately that is not true. They fixed the bug before the expansion pak is in consideration and the reason why this was rumored to be the issue was because someone new at the time overheard it and spread it, meaning they didnāt get around to actually hearing the big was fixed. Nintendo wanted them to use the expansion pak and the game wouldāve ran fine without it if Rare went with it as planned. The only thing that makes it where the expansion pak is needed, is because of some areas with better shaders. Thatās it.

I've never been a big DK fan but DK64 is legit a marvelous game. Still a little peeved I never collected ALL the character coinsāthe number of collectibles in that game is something like the most of any game ever made or some suchābut I did snag all the Golden Bananas and upgrades and what-have-you. Maybe someday I'll go back and max out my save file (though I'll need a walkthrough given I remember almost nothing about the game, LOL).
