My PhD utterly destroyed my life. I graduated 8 years ago with a doctorate in physical chemistry. 3 years into a post doc, I think I had 4 interviews, no job. Finally moved home and have spent the past 6 years on bullshit staffing company work. Landscaping, factories. Each one a little more humiliating than the one before. The resentment comes in because the people who sold the dream to me (professors especially) KNEW it was bullshit. My advisor telling me "I'll get you a job..." My post doc advisor "I'll get you a job..." Turns out, there aren't any. There never were. 12 years of my life absolutely pissed away. Only an idiot would pursue a graduate degree. Except maybe in business. The unmitigated greed that powers our country seems to love them.

Well I am doing my PhD with the goal that I will be around highly technical people in my field. I will try to take advantage of any opportunities that help me explore the unexplored. I also want to improve my skills. Yeah it's tough but then there is so much more to learn and explore. I believe anything else should come second just go with your flow and an open mind.

I think that suggesting that "A PhD ruined my life" is said only or mostly by people who went with least resistance path is simply wrong. I resigned from my nice corporate IT job to do a PhD. I got burn out and resigned after 3 years. My initial decision was far from least resistance path. I'd not say that "A PhD ruined my life", but I can fully understand the sentiment and I think it has a lot of to do with broken system (many diffrent systems tbh), not individual decisions...

I had a plan and an end goal, doing postdocs/research fellowship, trying to get a lecturing position - but a lower paid research position would suit me better too since that is what I like.
Now, 2 years unemployed, failed everything I have applied for (postdocs, grants, fellowships), fail to get all non-academic jobs I apply. A failed academic who clearly canāt cut it is unemployable to the commercial sector.
It is not only people who go into a PhD ājust becauseā that regret it, those of us who are simply not good enough do too.

Those people are kinda funny to me, like, undergrads can make mistakes because they were fresh out of highschool with no idea of how the world works in practice, you are an adult with a bachelor degree you can make mistakes but you are an adult and you know you have to take a 6 years comittement seriously

The PhD does not ruin your life, it messes up your head
