ALSO ALSO ALSO! I think this applies for other brass instruments, but most brass players tense up completely when they play high notes, so relax those shoulders and loosen up. Keep your embouchure tight and your body lax! This makes a WORLD of difference!

Tuba/sousa player for 6 years, that guy has solid advice. Dont focus on the corners of your mouth, just stay relaxed in all situations when playing the tuba. When getting into high notes, I cant stress this enough- relax, relax, relax. Notes will become SO much easier and I wish i myself knew this 5 years ago when i started

Im a freshman in highschool and I play tuba. One thing I learned most recently was that when you play higher notes your lips shouldnā€™t start to expand, they should go more into the mouthpiece. Itā€™s the same thing with lower notes, it will sound weird at first but your tone will improve a lot

One other thing is you donā€™t want to become a chipmunk! The cheeks should stay in, letting the air flow directly into the tuba :D

Although you want to be relaxed, being too relaxed can make your wind be unfocused, what I would recommend doing is opening your mouth all the way, then closing your lips over your teeth, after you've done that, you want your corners firm but firm down like a frown, otherwise wind could start escaping.

as a tubist in 8th grade i have learned that being relaxed is fine, up to a certain point. You still shouldnā€™t puff out your cheeks when playing, as that decreases tone quality and lowers intonation on notes. especially on pedal tones you want to separate teeth and not bite in order to give a fuller tone. in high range, DO NOT TENSE UP! That makes a very bad noise, and sounds somewhat like the trumpet in your ā€œtrumpet fartā€ mini-lesson. Remember for tuba, itā€™s 70% air and 30% buzzing. Use the mouthpiece by itself and buzz a concert F, Bb, or C. from there, practice slurring the pitch up and down. Never put too much pressure on your mouth, as the sound is also sub-optimal. Hope this could help!

When I was in 6th grade we had a professional tuba player, Patrick Sheridan, come into our band and he said tucking in the corners of your mouth still applies, but if the stay tucked in, you can puff out you cheeks a bit

My teacher always used rubber bands. The more you pull back on the ends of them (the ā€œcornersā€) the less there is to vibrate, especially for whole notes. But if you push them forward into the mouthpiece, your aperture will still get smaller, but you will still have so much lip to vibrate. Learned that from Mr Packman.

I know it gets repetitive but one of the most important thing to do is tongue each note it makes a world of difference

I play the tuba and I never loosen up and it sounds amazing.i don't know if it just works for me but.i would definitely recommend it if you are playing loud notes on the sousaphone though.
