Did you know that there are some people who prefer living in Africa over America? I know what you're thinking. That there are people risking their lives to go to the States! True. But for those who have the means; the ability to earn USD and live comfortably on either continent, Africa has a few perks over America. Shocking isn't it? There's the weather - it's pretty much warm all year round with a few exceptions. No major natural disasters like earthquakes (knock-on-wood), tornadoes or hurricanes. No random mass shootings, depending on the country. And your money goes a lot farther. So...is Africa the new frontier for the diaspora?

The African diaspora refers to the worldwide collection of communities descended from people of African origin. Historically, much of the African diaspora population began in the Americas and Europe, but it has also expanded to other regions, including Asia. The concept of the African diaspora now includes African descendants who have immigrated to other parts of the world consensually.
Cost of Living in Africa: One compelling reason for diasporans to consider Africa is the cost of living. While Africa is often portrayed as a continent with economic challenges, there are significant variations in the cost of living across different African cities:
Johannesburg (South Africa): With a cost of living index of 76, Johannesburg is relatively affordable compared to other global cities. It offers a vibrant cultural scene, excellent weather, and a growing tech startup ecosystem.
Cape Town (South Africa): Cape Town follows closely with a cost of living index of 73. It boasts stunning landscapes, a thriving arts community, and a favorable climate.
Nairobi (Kenya): Nairobi, with a cost of living index of 62, is another attractive destination. It’s a hub for innovation, entrepreneurship, and wildlife enthusiasts.
Despite the challenges, there are diasporans who choose to return to Africa or relocate there for various reasons. Here are a few examples:
Entrepreneurs and Tech Innovators: Africa’s burgeoning tech scene has attracted entrepreneurs and tech professionals. Cities like Lagos (Nigeria), Nairobi (Kenya), and Kigali (Rwanda) are hubs for startups and innovation. These diasporans contribute to the growth of local economies and create job opportunities.
Cultural Reconnection: Some diasporans seek to reconnect with their ancestral roots, culture, and heritage. They find fulfillment in contributing to community development, education, and arts.
Quality of Life: Africa offers advantages like pleasant weather, absence of natural disasters, and a lower cost of living. For those who can earn in USD or other strong currencies, their money goes further, allowing for a comfortable lifestyle.
Retirees and Returnees: Retirees often choose Africa for its affordability, vibrant culture, and warm climate. Additionally, some diasporans who have lived abroad for years decide to return to Africa to invest in businesses, real estate, or social impact projects.
Africa is indeed becoming a new frontier for the diaspora. While challenges persist, the allure of cultural reconnection, entrepreneurial opportunities, and a more affordable lifestyle draws many back to the continent. It’s a dynamic and evolving journey—one that continues to shape the global African diaspora.
