Lifelong Californian here and I dodged the bullet! I am 56 and hoping to retire next year or so; house paid off, no debtâŚ. I was planning to maybe move out state to make my retirement money last longer than it might in California, but where? I feel so sorry for the young people trying to make it and live independently these days. Our daughter might not be able to move out on her own for awhile because apartment rents are insane. I went to UCLA from 1986-1991 and had an off campus apartment for $600 mt; I hate to imagine what that might cost these daysâźď¸đđž

Why? It's SUPPLY AND DEMAND. Duh. It's interesting how many people seem to be shocked and surprised by this, as if they think SUPPLY AND DEMAND somehow doesn't apply to housing. Notice the top three are all places that EVERYONE wants to live. The bottom three are places NO ONE wants to live. If you really need help to understand why this is, then learn about SUPPLY AND DEMAND.
When more people want a thing than there is of that thing (or can be accommodated in places to live) then SOME PEOPLE are NOT going to be able to have that. Do you really think that 350 million (or more from around the world) could really all live in those top three states? Of course not. And SOMETHING is going to determine who gets to have that and who does NOT. If it's not price, then it's a lottery. But either way NOT everyone who wants it is going to be able to have it.
And to be clear, the "American dream" is to own your own home. It is NOT stipulated that it gets to be in the most highly in demand locales.

If this keeps up, then we may need to force ourselves back into multi-generational homes again. And yes, I say 'force' because I know some people don't want to live with their own family members for whatever reason. But you know, beggars can't be choosers. It's either that OR live on the streets.
Imagine that four-bedroom single-family house turned into a multi-generational house for ten people. Does that mean a person would have to decorate the house in a way that fits the liking of the group? Yes. Because the room doesn't belong to the person now. It belongs to everyone who shares that room. So, like it or not, people will be forced to become more considerate of other people's opinions and preferences.

What is the metric here. The medium household income is simple enough to acquire but what is this ârequired incomeâ youâre comparing it against? I live in Oregon on $83k and I have a car insurance an apartment and enough left over for food hobbies and household goods. What am I missing? A mortgage instead of rent? Kids? Whatâs YOUR dream for me because thatâs highly subjective.

It sounds like corporations need to start raising wages not just for minimum wage!!
