Massachusetts is skewed by the expensive east side of the state, NY is skewed by NYC, California is skewed by Silcon valley, but at the end of the day, employers adjust wages down to match the cost of living of the area faster than they adjust up

Lifelong Californian here and I dodged the bullet! I am 56 and hoping to retire next year or so; house paid off, no debt…. I was planning to maybe move out state to make my retirement money last longer than it might in California, but where? I feel so sorry for the young people trying to make it and live independently these days. Our daughter might not be able to move out on her own for awhile because apartment rents are insane. I went to UCLA from 1986-1991 and had an off campus apartment for $600 mt; I hate to imagine what that might cost these days‼️🙏🏾

24 years ago, a family doctor made roughly a little over $100,000/year. Boy, times have changed. $100,000 is starting to become nothing but middle class or lower class income for the average worker.

I’m sorry this is insane. The amnt of generic statements in here - “and a few other generic living expenses…” like what?!? You must be specific because an adequate understanding demands specificity. This short is closer to fear mongering than reporting.

isn’t it time América started buying low cost land in Argentina, Greenland or such low population areas and start building townships there? Only people born into highly educated and disciplined families seem to be making it in the mainland.

Why? It's SUPPLY AND DEMAND. Duh. It's interesting how many people seem to be shocked and surprised by this, as if they think SUPPLY AND DEMAND somehow doesn't apply to housing. Notice the top three are all places that EVERYONE wants to live. The bottom three are places NO ONE wants to live. If you really need help to understand why this is, then learn about SUPPLY AND DEMAND.
When more people want a thing than there is of that thing (or can be accommodated in places to live) then SOME PEOPLE are NOT going to be able to have that. Do you really think that 350 million (or more from around the world) could really all live in those top three states? Of course not. And SOMETHING is going to determine who gets to have that and who does NOT. If it's not price, then it's a lottery. But either way NOT everyone who wants it is going to be able to have it.
And to be clear, the "American dream" is to own your own home. It is NOT stipulated that it gets to be in the most highly in demand locales.

If this keeps up, then we may need to force ourselves back into multi-generational homes again. And yes, I say 'force' because I know some people don't want to live with their own family members for whatever reason. But you know, beggars can't be choosers. It's either that OR live on the streets.

Imagine that four-bedroom single-family house turned into a multi-generational house for ten people. Does that mean a person would have to decorate the house in a way that fits the liking of the group? Yes. Because the room doesn't belong to the person now. It belongs to everyone who shares that room. So, like it or not, people will be forced to become more considerate of other people's opinions and preferences.

What is the metric here. The medium household income is simple enough to acquire but what is this “required income” you’re comparing it against? I live in Oregon on $83k and I have a car insurance an apartment and enough left over for food hobbies and household goods. What am I missing? A mortgage instead of rent? Kids? What’s YOUR dream for me because that’s highly subjective.

Take some responsibility for your life then.
Or do you want to say you're more the victim?
Do you wanna complain and pass the blame?
Every generation has had people crying about how they have it harder. The ones who succeeded stop with the victim's mindset.
