iām not sure if this was the exact case but when tugging itās easy for a tug to be capsized if theyāre tied to a ship and that ship begins to move too fast. in some situations tug captains will release for the safety of the vessel if the boat being tugged has the ability to safely operate and navigate under the ships own power
i saw someone say itās because they didnāt want to pay the tug. even if that is the case. they would be more likely to rely on the tug so they wonāt have to worry about using ships power.
i personally think the ship lost control much earlier than we think or had lost control and no steering input was needed so they didnāt realize until late prompting a mayday call to the bridge. i believe the ship couldnāt have avoided the pillar considering that without control the boat couldāve rotated and hit the bridge support with either the starboard or port side of the bow of the ship

Tugs are useless and it is dangerous for the tugs at the speed the ship was making. Tugs are needed because at slow speeds. Large ships canāt maneuver until they have some speed up and water moving past their rudder. But once at a ship is at speed a tug just trying to push the bow with no lines out can cause a tug to capsize and sink in seconds.

There are āpilotsā that bring the ships in and out. The captain doesnāt do it and isnāt allowed to.
