There are ā€œpilotsā€ that bring the ships in and out. The captain doesnā€™t do it and isnā€™t allowed to.

From one trucker to another. Letā€™s let the maritime experts worry about the could have should haves. We have enough problems on the highway.

I said the same thing... "Where were the tugboats to escort the ship"!!!

Because you have to pay the tugs and everything is about cutting costs so that the fat cat corps can get richer

Yes! Thank you for asking that.

Tugs aren't required to move boats completely out of the harbor. There are Harbor Pilots who navigate ships out to the shopping lanes. You've likely never seen a boat go past that bridge under its own power with tugs. It's a daily occurrence.

iā€™m not sure if this was the exact case but when tugging itā€™s easy for a tug to be capsized if theyā€™re tied to a ship and that ship begins to move too fast. in some situations tug captains will release for the safety of the vessel if the boat being tugged has the ability to safely operate and navigate under the ships own power

i saw someone say itā€™s because they didnā€™t want to pay the tug. even if that is the case. they would be more likely to rely on the tug so they wonā€™t have to worry about using ships power.

i personally think the ship lost control much earlier than we think or had lost control and no steering input was needed so they didnā€™t realize until late prompting a mayday call to the bridge. i believe the ship couldnā€™t have avoided the pillar considering that without control the boat couldā€™ve rotated and hit the bridge support with either the starboard or port side of the bow of the ship

Dam brother spitten facts! Thatā€™s actually a great question shit that size usually has 4+ tugs as an escort of sorts.

No brother, itā€™s bigger than that. That key bridge is a main part of the East Coast infrastructure and all all the food to the north.

Itā€™s not a requirement for Baltimoreā€¦

@patjohn775

That doesnā€™t need to be a requirement. What happens when your tug breaks down. The requirement should be ā€œconcrete blocks in front of bridge supports so any uncontrolled vessel canā€™t damage infrastructureā€

Cause itā€™s a straight shot into the port. They only use tugs to be pushed into and out of the mooring berth.

Tugs are useless and it is dangerous for the tugs at the speed the ship was making. Tugs are needed because at slow speeds. Large ships canā€™t maneuver until they have some speed up and water moving past their rudder. But once at a ship is at speed a tug just trying to push the bow with no lines out can cause a tug to capsize and sink in seconds.
