Replacing those excessive lanes with dedicated bus lanes or tram lines is a better solution. In my opinion, making motorists "jealous" with free-flowing buses/trams will encourage them to use public transport (or maybe went malding and commit stupid NIMBY-ish protests).

There is more to it than this. In a city, the main bottleneck is not the number of lanes but time spent stopped in intersections. Even without induced demand, increasing the number of lanes hardly improves throughput when traffic lights have limited throughput.

Also, the logic of traffic being able to be treated with more lanes the way water flow problems would be treated with a bigger pip is flawed. Water can pretty much come from anywhere and go anywhere, and one unit of water is barely any different from another. However, with people, they have their unique places they come from and a unique place to go, and the places on either end are not as interchangeable.

4 lanes city street should at first not to be called normal... i would call a 2 lane, a one way lane or a 2 and a half lane for left turns additional reasonable, maybe normal...

Making cars less convenient just so people will pay the government money to use their transit systems.
Public transit is great but it should not come at the expense of cars, cars are freedom while public transit is reliance on the government.
The best society is one where both coexist which some who advocate for car free cities can’t seem to realise.
