1) you're wasting fuel 2) the lighter fluid - when introduced to air - rapidly evaporates and becomes a gas, and when introduced to a spark it ignites. The reason this works is because by holding down that button the lighter is consistently releasing the lighter fluid, and so bringing a flame to it ignites it.
