Best portrayed by the gunpowder era star forts but the idea of zigzagging walls in a star pattern around a city is a reasonable idea in the earlier wars. It allows defenders a better angle to shoot attackers on an adjacent wall.
The major drawback is medieval archers had a very limited lethal range. An arrow could reach 150 yards but had very little momentum left to penetrate a foe so effective range would be much shorter therefore the wall lengths that could be covered would also be short. Too much zigzagging is just too expensive to build and too manpower intensive to guard. Protruding towers is much simpler.
