#Luke #Yoda #Force

Tatooine is a desert, Hoth is cold, Dagobah is a swamp, Endor is a forest -- there’s a story meaning to all of these environments. Deserts are barren and lifeless, winter is a harsh struggle, swamps are miserable and limit mobility, forests are about growth and harmony. Our feelings about each of these environments match the mood of the scenes they feature in: Luke is bored by his dry life of no opportunities on Tatooine, Empire’s cold opening foreshadows the cruel struggle ahead, Dagobah is where Luke feels lost and bogged down, Episode 6 is where we finally achieve harmony through a balance of life and death. These planets are not just props, they characterize their scenes and enrich their movies’ plots as a whole.

The amount of analysis you put into this video is amazingly high but on the other hand the screenwriter also really put a lot of work into their movies that is sometimes unnoticed so props to both of you guys.

Environmental story telling? Huh, never gave planets in starwars much thought.

A little something I would add to the Dagobah storytelling is that it's almost a foil to Tatoonie. Dagobah is so full of life to the point that it's overwhelming. Which also reflects Luke's struggle at this point. He's not used to this environment like he's not used to the way of the Jedi and the changes are as overwhelming as the environment.

It’d not even just about metaphors and stuff, having these really grunge, natural, dirty environmentsjust visually makes Star Wars so much more interesting with the contrast to the high tech sci-fi spaceships and lasers and all that, there’s almost like a proto-cyberpunk type aesthetic to it with its grimy futurism.

Star Wars has taught me that well-designed environment makes a story more vibrant, memorable, and better overall. This extra insight into it is golden

Mustafar in episode 3 represents burning away Anakin to make room for Vader by this logic. I love this idea and I wanna see if every planet does this

Screenwriters: "How deep should we write our metaphors for youtubers to dissect?"
Schnee: "Yes"

I always found that good settings and cinematography are great at protecting the tone a feeling of a story. Many disregard it as chance but it is not chance. It is the mood of the storyteller and it, when done well, pulls the consumer in to the mood of the scene. I have been enjoying looking back at a film that changed the industry with a script I could write 😋
