Some of you may be aware that prior to becoming a financial advisor, I spent almost a decade as a registered nurse, this June will be 10 years. In those years I gained experience in trauma centered care, leadership, education, and change management, relationships and so much more. When I transitioned to a career in finance, I carried over many skills from my nursing background.

I have come to find (after my mom helped me realize it) that I could use my nursing process in financial planning. I continue to use SOAP (Subjective, Objective, Assessment and Plan) notes for my meetings so I can remember everything I need to process follow ups.

When I work with someone, I also use SBAR, as a mental guide, when having a conversation, this helps me truly know and understand who I am working with, what experiences they’ve had with finances - both good and bad. I begin by identifying the Situation, delve into Background information and experiences - this allows me to make an Assessment of the current situation, and then compile a Recommendation for actionable steps for our next meeting. This approach ensures a thorough understanding of the individuals I assist, allowing them to feel heard, and to know their best interests are in alignment with my recommendations in order to have a positive impact in this area of their life.

Whether providing a listening ear, offering a supportive shoulder, or guiding someone toward a secure future, there’s enormous value, for me, in knowing I've made a positive impact on someone's life.
