It's meant to be an ironic/sarcastic comment. American born chinese is a satire on chinese culture, so this was rebutting the sentiment of the typical chinese husband/wife

Something small that I loved about ABC was when Jin overheard his parents fighting, the subtitles were choppy since he couldn’t translate them fully. Felt all too real having to translate thru walls and weak language skills.

Interesting. As far as I know the graphics novel is a descriptive of experience of an ABC. Not prescriptive on how things ought to be. Merely indicative of the East-West cultural differences. An eye opener.

That's what every Asian parents say to all their kids. It is disgusting to think that money and power is all they think about, and never their true emotions. I have to learn the hard way and suffer the consequences from them as a result.
