As a guitarist, I literally remember where I was and what I was doing the first time "Smells Like Teen Spirit" came on the radio. Never heard anything like that in my life and I was a music fiend that listened to everything.
I didn't know how it sounds to people today but when it first dropped, it was life changing without a doubt.

This is spot on. Thats why there are a million people that can play EVH's 'eruption' or shred. Millions. Only a handful of people to EVER walk the earth can change the world with simple good hooks and real emotion. Kurt's guitar was relatively simple in many ways. He said he was the "anti guitar hero". Most critics don't get that Kurt's music is meant to be viewed as a whole. It is the song. The abstract, smart and symbolic lyrics. The delivery. The raw emotion. Being able to take the feedback and chaos and shape it into a song that connects with people on an emotional level. The fact that he was ahead of the curve. That he was a conductor of sorts of generation x. I'm a guitarist. I love metal. My first tape of "real music" was when I found Appetite For Destruction in 5th grade. I loved all that thrash and even Motley Crue type stuff. BUT. When I heard Nirvana it was something entirely different. The world had changed. You could feel it. That's another level.
