For anyone wanting to learn more there’s a lovely book called “Romanising Oriental Gods” by Jaime Alvar Ezquerra! It talks about the roman cults of Isis, Mithras, and Cybele!

Iseum Savariense is another such example, a temple to Isis in modern-day Hungary!

When I was in Naples I was surprised at the number of Isis statues and shrines. I was unaware that Isis was such a big part.

I have to say the Egyptian iconography hits a lot harder than the Roman.

Very interesting. I never knew Isis worship traveled outside of Egypt in ancient times, though I once knew a neopagan that worshiped her.

Very informative video. I hope to see more. Love ancient history now that I’m not in school and have to learn about it.

This reminds me of how another African mother deity is worshipped outside of Africa. Irunmole-Yemonja: the metaphysical mother of all the Orishas & the partner of creation with Obatala, is worshiped outside of YorubaLand (south west, Nigeria). Across Latin America, like Brazil, Cuba, Colombia, etc. Like Isis of Kemet being worshiped in parts of ancient Europe, sometimes Yemonja’s appearance has been altered to be Eurocentric (though with the female Irunmole, that takes on a post-racial/misogynoir context of the TransAtlantic Slave Trade).

Isis also made it past the alpes to Augusta Treverorum. A statue of her, amongst other objects with influence from ancient Egyptian culture, can be found in the Landesmuseum Trier

In Germany, particularly the Swabians or parts were as well associated with the Isis worship. A sanctuary of Isis from the first century BE was discovered in the city centre of Mainz in 1999 while upgrading a building. Then there’s the famous column at the bottom of Notre Dame. The Magna Mater worship was widespread & the way it did is not surprising but very fascinating indeed

Interesting how interconnected Egyptian, Greek and Roman cultures are. Makes you realize that ancient Egyptian culture didn’t really “die”, they just get assimilated to the romans.

Hey Dr. Andrew! Fan of the channel. Could you do a remake of on off your earlier video, specifically on the Mithraic Mysteries?

P.S. I did already watch the Isis video when it came out. Nicely done 🙂👍
