Okay, tips from someone who works in a clinic to make your process as painless as possible:
1) Have your calendar or phone ready. If you're have some days that might work for you to be scheduled, name those first. It's way faster than just asking what our soonest is since it likely won't work with your schedule
2) Have your insurance cards ready before you call, especially if you've never been there before
3) When you call a new place, say "Hi, I'm a new patient and I'd like to establish". Most places will automatically start looking you up when you just give your name and date of birth, let them know you're new first so you don't have to repeat yourself
4) Ask questions. Seriously, any question you have is probably FAR from the worst question we've ever been asked. I once had a girl get very flustered because she had questions about her eye drops. That same day, a woman had asked me if I was trans and when I said "Uh yeah?" She then asked how sex worked. You are not the worst thing someone has asked me even that week, I promise.
