The only reason astronomers don't want to call Pluto a planet is because if it was a planet, then there'd be possibly hundreds of planets in the solar system. There is no other reason, the idea of a cleared orbit even doesn't eliminate just Pluto, it also eliminates Neptune since Pluto crosses it's orbit. Imo, "planet" should have subclasses including terrestrial, gas giant, ice giant, terrestrial dwarf and ice dwarf. You might even include other classes like the so called "failed stars" and "hot jupiters" of other solar systems. Also note, "planet" specifically means it orbits our sun, not other stars despite us knowing there are planets around other stars. It's all semantics.

This is generally how I've felt about the debate too. I like Tyson's framing of "first of a new category, not last of an old one", but really, it is just semantics. The inner planets and the gas giants could reasonably be different types of objects, and at some point a gas giant that's big enough is a brown dwarf... All that really matters is that we understand each other when we talk about these worlds.

Hay, why are not dwarf planets considered planets when they named the whole calls dwarf planet? I mean it really silly. I get it, you do not want to memorize every Kuiper Belt object out there, or just the spherical ones. It gets a bit unwieldy. But hay. That is a dumb way of classifying stuff just because you do not wish to memorize all the names.
So to me just keep it to 4 rocky planets, 4 gas giants, And a bunch of Dwarf Planets. (Heck, you can also do sup categories. Ceres, which was one considered a planet too, is now a dwarf planet and an asteroid. And 2 of the gas giants can be also called as ice giants. But they're still gas giants in my book.)

I think Pluto is more deserving of the definition of planet than any of the gas giants. At least you could land on pluto. According to NASA, we don't know if there is a solid surface to the gas giants. We don't measure the size of earth to it upper atmosphere, but that is essentially what we are doing with the gas giants. Maybe we could call them failed suns?
