The painting depicts the coronation as Queen of Portugal of Princess Ines de Castro in 1361, six years after her death. Ines de Castro was lady-in-waiting to Constance of Castile , the wife of Pedro of Portugal , Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Portugal. In love with Ines, and widowed in 1345, Pedro refused to remarry and lived with Ines despite the scandal caused by their affair. Under pressure from the Court, King Alfonso IV of Portugal , Pedro's father, eventually had Ines assassinated onJanuary 7, 1355.
Pedro succeeded his father Alfonso in 1357 and claimed to have secretly married Ines in 1354, making her Queen of Portugal and legitimizing their children. According to legend, he had Ines' body dug up, had her dressed in a purple mantle, seated on the throne and crowned as queen, and then forced all the nobles of the kingdom to kiss her hand
