Next up: Why Europe is a lot further north than you think.
I personally found it mind-boggling that Barcelona - a sunny city on the Mediterranean coast - is at the same degrees of latitude as New York which has a climate more similar to Northern Europe.
The reason why Europe is a lot warmer than the expected temperature at its degrees of latitude is the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) which delivers warm ocean water to European shores that serves to temper the climate. That is why the further inland you go, the more extreme the cold during wintertime gets.
This also implies that if AMOC were to seize because of climate change, Europe might actually paradoxically experience significantly cooler local winters while the summer temperatures would get more extreme.
