I've been woodworking for about a year now and been able to successfully learn how to build all sorts of projects working off some glued 2x4s supporting three pieces of plywood glued together. It's not a pretty workbench but it cost me less than $100 and can get the job done for what I need until I can build a new one using the skills I learned with this hunk of wood I call a bench now.

My first work bench was a square dining room table that my sister in law was throwing out. I spent 2 hours on it. reinforced the legs with cross beams. And screwed some 1Ć4 oak scrap pieces across the top. Mounted a Vice on the corner and it was done! Still like using it because it's easy to move around in 360Ā°

First workbench I built, 32 years ago, is teaching its end of life. It changed as lot during that time. The 3/4ā plywood is sagging in the middle as are the 2 bus I used along the edge. That has impacted planning up the new material for the top of the new one. I never expected my first one to last this long. It could probably got until the end of my life but ready for the upgrade.

One word...Workmate. They're portable, storable, with two height adjustments. You can clamp your workpiece to them and they have bench dogs for clamping wider pieces. If you don't have a work bench, I recommend starting with one of these. I still use mine to this day. They're so handy, I bought one for each of my five kids.

I wish I heard this advice early on. When I built my shed shop my first goal was to build a roubo. Without a bench it was difficult to plane flat and I would leave the shop frustrated that the progress was going slow. I ended up scrapping that project and opted for a Nicholson style. It took a day to build and didnāt require much flattening. Six years in and itās still the bench I use. However I am going to build my roubo as I want something stout with a wagon vise. But I plan on keeping the Nicholson because itās a good bench for certain tasks.

Another plus is that you'll have a workbench to build your workbench on.
