Another plus is that you'll have a workbench to build your workbench on.

I've been woodworking for about a year now and been able to successfully learn how to build all sorts of projects working off some glued 2x4s supporting three pieces of plywood glued together. It's not a pretty workbench but it cost me less than $100 and can get the job done for what I need until I can build a new one using the skills I learned with this hunk of wood I call a bench now.

My first workbench was made with lumber I "repurposed" from a condemned footbridge near my house. I had three tools: A cordless drill, screw gun, and sawzall.

It worked fine for years. It's now my wife's potting table in the garage.

First workbench, was DeWalt folding "work stand" (still use)
Second, was an old interior door on two folding saw horses. Started to sag.
Third and current, is the Rex Quick Stack Bench.
Build it this year. Sold.

Also, making a workbench is easier once you have a workbench.

In 1972, needed a workbench so put one together with 4x4 legs, 2x4 frame, and two pieces of 2' x 6' x 3/4" plywood for a top. 52 years and five houses later, still have and use that bench.

My current workbench is an old dresser that I salvaged. I affixed a plywood board to the top of it, which I also salvaged, removed the drawers and customized it to my needs.
I've been using it for 3 years and making small improvements to it over time and it still works great. šŸ˜

wow, right on! Years flying by, and I still dont' have that dream oak slab dinner table. Fortunately I have a bench from 2x6 pine out of Homedepot, at least my tool collections have a place to rest.

My first work bench was a square dining room table that my sister in law was throwing out. I spent 2 hours on it. reinforced the legs with cross beams. And screwed some 1Ɨ4 oak scrap pieces across the top. Mounted a Vice on the corner and it was done! Still like using it because it's easy to move around in 360Ā°

Yes great advice! Best 1st project is to build some type of bench using what ever cheap or scrap lumber you have. Let the lumber guide your design as well. This is invaluable experience. Even decades of experience I often make prototype projects with scrap wood to learn from the process.

I think building a fancy amd complicated workbench as your first workbench is a very good way to learn woodworking and all the imperfection on your bench will remind you your mistakes

First workbench I built, 32 years ago, is teaching its end of life. It changed as lot during that time. The 3/4ā€ plywood is sagging in the middle as are the 2 bus I used along the edge. That has impacted planning up the new material for the top of the new one. I never expected my first one to last this long. It could probably got until the end of my life but ready for the upgrade.

One word...Workmate. They're portable, storable, with two height adjustments. You can clamp your workpiece to them and they have bench dogs for clamping wider pieces. If you don't have a work bench, I recommend starting with one of these. I still use mine to this day. They're so handy, I bought one for each of my five kids.

I'm currently building my first workbench using 2x4s and plywood I had lying around. Is is the most beautiful, rugged, straight and square workbench there is? Hell no, but it will still be better than the folding work table from Costco I've been using.

I totally agree. My current workbench is a 50-Euro secondhand Ikea table. It's flat, stable, and works for now. When circumstances change, I'll probably make another one.

I'm on my third bench and it is probably not my final, lifetime, dream bench. Each bench building project has advanced me in my woodworking skills tremendously. Just pick a simple design and get started!

Built your low Roman bench, then used that to build your Moravian knockdown bench. Found the top from a coffee table somebody put on the curb. Good enough and I can pull it out when I need the room.

I think the most important part of a workbench is having a top that can either be replaced or resurfaced when it's been heavily used. After that, everything depends on what your exact needs are, based on what type of work you do and your preferences for how to secure your pieces.

I wish I heard this advice early on. When I built my shed shop my first goal was to build a roubo. Without a bench it was difficult to plane flat and I would leave the shop frustrated that the progress was going slow. I ended up scrapping that project and opted for a Nicholson style. It took a day to build and didnā€™t require much flattening. Six years in and itā€™s still the bench I use. However I am going to build my roubo as I want something stout with a wagon vise. But I plan on keeping the Nicholson because itā€™s a good bench for certain tasks.
