The musket is a firearm that was improved from the Arquebus and was widely used from the 16th to the 19th centuries. It was a full-length firearm with a long barrel, and unlike later rifles, the barrel did not have a rifling. It was a black powder weapon that had the basic form of a modern firearm, such as a stock, trigger, and barrel. The criteria for classifying muskets varied depending on the era, but in the 15th and 16th centuries, when firearms were developed, they were equipped with a stock and had a caliber compared to the archebus. Firearms that were larger and had a barrel longer than 4 feet (approximately 122 cm) were called muskets.
There is no relationship between the firing method represented by matchlock or flintlock and the definition of a musket, and if it meets the above conditions, a matchlock can be classified as a musket. However, since the Arquebus is a firearm that was used before the development of the flintlock method and was discontinued, it is generally accurate to think of the Arquebus as a subcategory of the matchlock.
