"Lay" is the one that gets me. I know it's right, but "I lay down for a nap yesterday" just sounds wrong.

The issue with language is that all of the people who don't know the correct usage end up changing the common usage with their incorrect usage which then becomes the correct usage by stint of it being more common. Hence, language evolves forever forward leaving those of us who know better scratching our heads and getting pulled along with it.

As a german i thought my english was at least average. The deeper i get into questioning the grammar or the multiple meanings and spellings of certain words (depending on their context) in the english language, the more i realize: i don't know shit.
