Scientists have created the world's most detailed map on a complex brain. Mapping over 130,000 neurons and 50 million synaptic connections this is a huge step in understanding how brains function.

It’s funny because I’ve witnessed how intelligent all living things can be, even flys seem to hide when you pull out a fly swatter with the intent to harm them, the moment it’s out of your hands they will come out again.

Y'know fly brain is gonna get used for automated drones,
but they'll keep flying into windows so they won't be too scary just yet

Wasn't it like semi recently (circa a few years ago) that scientists were able to fully map the simplest worm brain? This is an enormous leap really

It doesn't show how it works, rather it shows how it is assembled.

The fly is drawn to the cooler climate. It follows the trail of cool air inside-similar to how cartoon characters hover toward the smell of a freshly baked pie.

Once inside, when it goes near the door it came in through, it feels the warm air and temperature shift near the door and actively avoids leaving.

That's my theory at least.

I'm surprised how up to date YT shorts is. I read about this the day the article came out and sure enough, this video also was made very shortly after that article. Big ups in your content production, man!

This is the first step towards what is called "low-level full brain simulation". Unlike current AI machine learning methods, namely the transformer model which can be seen as a high-level approach to emulating how neural networks function, a full brain simulation is exactly as it sounds: it replicates the brain physically, including all of its chemical and electrical properties. As a result, it takes immense computational power to achieve this given the immense quantity of synaptic connections the simulation will have to emulate. That is still the biggest barrier.

A neat way to think of it is like with emulating video game systems. High-level emulation tends to give you WAAAY better performance, but at the cost of accuracy since you're emulating the software, whereas low-level emulators are exact because they are emulating the original hardware, but of course you won't get anywhere near the performance as high-level.

Once we are able to fully emulate the human brain at a hardware level, in my opinion that is when true human immortality will be achieved. We will be able to upload our own brains to the cloud and run them on supercomputers. Our entire reality will be whatever we wish for it to be.
