When i was a kid I did a report on WW2 I interviewed my neighbor who was in the war. He told me he was told to smoke out a cave and didn't realize it was women and children hiding. He teared up and told me that he has come to terms that he's going to hell for what he did because no man deserves to enter heaven after what he did. He was the sweetest old man i ever met.

It was an unimaginable thing to ask a young man to do . And live with it for the rest of his life.

It's wild how he completely avoided the question but gave incredible insight.

Anyone else notice how he is speaking in the present, not past tense at all. That dude is still there, probably never left that island....

My grandfather saw plenty of combat in WWII. He would talk about the amazing tanks and running through fields with the BAR. He would not talk about his time with the flamethrower. He only told me it was horrible and he could still see and hear those poor people.

He passed away last year at 99.

That this man survived is an extreme Rarity. I read the average lifespan of a soldier with flame-throwing duties was measured in minutes.

My grandfather was a flame thrower he was hit with a bullet to his back hip and sent back home it's a miracle he made it out alive most flame throwers didn't live long in war . God bless our vets .

i remember reading a story somewhere about a pacific veteran and ex-flamethrower attending a family and friends bbq some years after the war. The smell of the cooking meat triggered his PTSD and he broke down in front of everyone screaming and crying. This was sometime in the 50's, 60's or maybe later, but when it still wasn't ideal for men to be seen crying and breaking down openly. Only one or two of the family members knew what was happening and tried to calm him down. The rest just stood there embarrassed and shocked. Heartbreaking stuff.

I'm sure those screams he has heard have haunted him forever. The horror of war kills not only those who die but also part of those that survive.
